Easter is an important holiday in many countries. People celebrate it in spring. It is a time of new life, flowers, and fresh energy. 🌷
In the Czech Republic, we have many Easter traditions. We decorate eggs, bake special food, and boys visit girls with a braided willow whip (pomlázka). But what about Easter in English-speaking countries?
Let´s have a look at some Easter vocabulary
Easter = Velikonoce
Easter egg = velikonoční vajíčko
decorated eggs = malovaná vajíčka
chocolate egg = čokoládové vajíčko
Easter bunny = velikonoční zajíček 🐰
spring = jaro
holiday = svátek
bake = péct
perníčky = gingerbread cookies
hot cross bun = mazanec
Easter lamb cake = velikonoční beránek
pomlázka = braided willow whip
Boys use a braided willow whip called „pomlázka“. It is a traditional Czech Easter whip made from willow branches.
We bake an Easter lamb cake. It is a traditional Czech dessert.
Easter traditions in the UK and USA
In the UK and the USA, people celebrate Easter a bit differently.
Children look for chocolate eggs in the garden. This is called an Easter egg hunt. The Easter bunny brings the eggs to children.
People also eat special food. In the UK, they eat hot cross buns (sweet bread with a cross on top).
In the USA, there is a famous event: The Easter Egg Roll at the White House.
